When American paratrooper Arthur Boorman returned home injured from the Gulf War, doctors told him he’d never walk unassisted again. For 15 years, Boorman believed his doctors. In fact, he’d pretty much relegated to thinking of himself as a piece of furniture. Consequently, his weight ballooned to 297 lbs. At just 47 years old, the disheartened veteran was in constant pain. He could not move very quickly. He was on crutches, had a back brace, leg braces, and a CPAP machine. It took him 10-20 minutes to get out of bed every morning.

Too many years spent jumping out of a plane left Arthur Boorman with chronic knee and back pain—issues so severe that doctors told him he’d never walk unassisted again. And for more than a decade, Boorman believed them. But then one day he bought some videos from DDP Yoga—that’s yoga à la Diamond Dallas Page, a champion wrestler-turned-yogi—and everything changed.

As demonstrated in this incredible video, the non-impact yoga workout helped Boorman shed 140 lbs in 10 months.

Yoga isn’t just an excellent weight-loss therapy for troops returning home injured. According to CareForVets.org, yoga is also being used to help treat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among war veterans who’ve served in Afghanistan and in Iraq.

I took control. I stopped thinking of myself as a victim of my injuries. I stopped thinking of these as permanent conditions. I started thinking of how to fix things. I started working the program every day. I fell down many times. Hard. I got back up every time, more determined than ever to make this work.
