A recent FDA inspection of the Julian Bakery company found 4 major violations with their low-carb and Paleo bread products. You can read the full Warning Letter to Julian Bakery from the FDA dated 7/23/14 here. Basically, Julian Bakery has been found to have “false and misleading” calorie counts, fat, carbohydrates, and nutrient claims on their products. This is especially alarming since many people low-carb and Paleo communities are buying Julian Bakery’s bread and other products based on the label information and product claims.

“The labeling for your Net Carb Zero and Paleo Bread products have provided a meaning to the term “net carbs” that is used on your product labeling. However, FDA has not defined the term “net carbs” and we have concerns that this term may be misleading to consumers.”

My experience with this company has been limited. But after the experience I did have, I could never recommend their products to anyone. Two years ago I ordered several loaves of their (at the time) newly released Paleo bread. When my order arrived, the bread was smushed and the plastic wrap around each loaf was very sweaty. The exterior and, as I later discovered, interior of the bread had a nasty layer of green mold. I immediately requested a refund via email.

Julian Bakery emailed me back, “We do apologize your order arrived moldy. We actually had a batch go out without Apple Cider Vinegar which prevents it from Molding. We can send a prompt replacement this week. Please let us know – Thank you!”

It took almost a month, but I was fully refunded. After what I’d seen, I did not wish to get a replacement.

The bread I did look at before I tossed out the entire order reminded me of a sponge, very much like the Julian Bakery bread featured in this video:

I wish I’d read the following reveiw prior to making a purchase.

The very passionate Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb blogger, Jimmy Moore has shared his concerns about Julian Bakery and their products over the past few years. In fact, one of his readers, 64-year old Deborah Krueger from Portland, Oregon, was so curious about the claims made on one of Julian Bakery’s products, SmartCarb #1 bread, that she decided to test her own blood sugar after consuming the Julian Bakery SmartCarb Bread.

After a sudden, off-the-chart spike in her blood glucose levels that occured immediately after eating just two slices of the “1g net carb” bread all by itself, she wanted to know why. So Krueger paid for a nutritional analysis from America’s best food testing company, Exova, to see if the claims made by Julian Bakery on their product label were true. You can read the detailed account of what comprises the SmartCarb #1 bread from this independent testing lab here.
